Reichenbach: scientific realist and logical empricist?

چکیده
Abstract Hans Reichenbach’s position in the debate over scientific realism is remarkable. On one hand, he endorsed programmatic premises of logical empiricism; on other, explicitly employed a realist approach to conceptions such as reference, causality, and inference best explanation. How could that work out? It will be shown present paper view not, frequently assumed, opposed empiricism but rather positivism. A distinction without difference? Not at all, least for Reichenbach. As well known, his particular—probabilistic—variant was intended circumvent what considered shortcomings Vienna Circle’s verificationist (reductionist) language science. In Experience Prediction (1938), Reichenbach became most explicit this regard. However, I shall argue remained notoriously unstable end. oscillated between full-fledged reading an eminently pragmatist reading. Nevertheless, contribution proved instrumental preparing subsequent efforts reconciling realism.

Questions concerning how we are to interpret our best scientific theories, make sense of what they are telling us, or even just connect them systematically to the world around us have a remarkably long intellectual pedigree. And they have most often been motivated not by the sorts of rarified puzzles we encounter in the course of trying to decide how we could even possibly understand claims abo...

متن کاملGrounds and limits: Reichenbach and foundationalist epistemology
From 1929 onwards, C. I. Lewis defended the foundationalist claim that judgements of the form ‘x is probable’ only make sense if one assumes there to be a ground y that is certain (where x and y may be beliefs, propositions, or events). Without this assumption, Lewis argues, the probability of x could not be anything other than zero. Hans Reichenbach repeatedly contested Lewis’s idea, calling i...
متن کاملChoosing the realist framework
There has been an empiricist tradition in the core of Logical Positivism/ Empiricism, starting with Moritz Schlick and ending in Herbert Feigl (via Hans Reichenbach), according to which the world of empiricism need not be a barren place devoid of all the explanatory entities posited by scientific theories. The aim of this paper is to articulate this tradition and to explore ways in which its ke...

Even though the Linking Open Data cloud is constantly growing, there is a serious lack of published data sets related to the domain of academic mathematics. The paper describes an approach to extracting and analyzing the structure ...
